What cookies are
A cookie is a small file a website puts on your device so it can remember something, such as that you are logged in or that you have already dismissed a message. Some are deleted when you close your browser, others stay for a set period. Similar technologies, such as tracking pixels and local storage, do much the same job, and everything in this policy applies to those too.
Your choice
When you first arrive, a banner asks what you are willing to accept.
Essential cookies are set without asking, because the site will not work without them. Nothing else is set until you agree to it. If you decline, analytics and advertising cookies are not loaded at all.
You can change your mind at any time, using the settings panel further down this page. Whatever you choose there takes effect straight away, withdrawing is as easy as agreeing, and declining does not stop you using the site.
What we use, and what each one does
Essential. These keep the site working: remembering your cookie choice, keeping a form you are filling in, security, and load balancing. They do not track you and they are set on the basis that the site cannot run without them.
Analytics. Google Analytics tells us how many people visit, which pages they read and roughly where they come from, so we know which writing is worth doing more of. It is set only with your agreement.
Advertising. The Meta pixel tells us whether somebody who saw one of our Instagram or Facebook adverts went on to do anything on the site, and allows those adverts to be shown to relevant audiences. It is set only with your agreement.
Embedded content. Some pages embed things served by other companies: our video player, the booking calendar, and video from Vimeo or YouTube. These may set their own cookies when the page loads, and they are governed by the privacy policies of the companies that provide them.
The settings panel below lists the individual cookies in each category, with how long each one lasts, and it stays accurate when they change, which is the reason the detail sits there rather than being typed out here.
Browser settings
You can also control cookies in your browser, and block or delete them there. This is not how we ask for your consent, and it is a blunter instrument: blocking all cookies will stop parts of this site and many others from working properly. Your browser’s help pages explain how.
