Unlock Your Potential: The Benefits of Moving Intuitively

As children, moving intuitively comes naturally. Play and fun drive our movements, connecting us to what feels good. However, as we grow older, our lives become busier, leaving less room for spontaneous, joyful physical activity. Reclaiming this connection requires intentional effort.

The Joy of Movement in Early Years

During school, college, and university, structured team sports foster a sense of play and fun. These experiences often fade as adult responsibilities take over. Many turn to gyms for structured workouts, which can feel like the opposite of the freedom and joy we experienced in childhood.

The Downside of Over-Structured Fitness

While structured workouts are essential for discipline and physical progression, they can also strip away fluidity and enjoyment. For 14 years as a Personal Trainer, I saw how rigid routines could confine people’s bodies and minds, myself included. I craved movement that felt free and playful again.

Why Structure Is Still Essential

Discipline and structure are critical for building a foundation of strength and skill. As the saying goes:
“Learn the rules like a Master, so you can break them like an Artist.”
Mastery through structured practice paves the way for intuitive, fluid movement.

The Inspiration of Functional Fitness

CrossFit champions, like Rich Froning, embody this balance. Years of disciplined training enable them to intuitively adapt to any physical challenge. Their mastery prepares them for versatility and spontaneity, showing that true fitness is about practical application.

The Liberation of Animal Flow

Discovering Animal Flow transformed my approach to movement. Inspired by practices like BJJ, Capoeira, Yoga, and Parkour, it freed me from traditional gym routines. Initially, even Animal Flow felt structured, but over time, I learned to use it intuitively—flowing without a plan and reconnecting with the joy of spontaneous movement.

How Discipline Leads to Freedom

Ironically, it’s discipline and structure that enable intuitive movement. Without the foundational skills learned through structured practice, the freedom to move spontaneously wouldn’t exist. This principle applies not just to fitness, but to intuitive living, eating, and thinking.
